Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such treatments should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
